Biography

Son of a general practitioner and an anthropologist David Wilson trained at Kings College Hospital London and the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals. He now spends two days a week undertaking interventional procedures in the spine ranging from nerve root blocks to the complex treatment of vertebral tumours including tumour ablation, cement augmentation and combined interventional radiology/surgical procedures.

He was a pioneer in the development of diagnostic ultrasound for musculoskeletal disorders in the 1980s. Since 2012 he has developed ultrasound/MRI fusion imaging guidance for spinal procedures. He has 33 years of experience in vertebroplasty and has been the principal European investigator for multicentre randomised controlled trials on the treatment of insufficiency fractures. He is the Editor of a leading textbook on MSK imaging currently undergoing its third edition. As a founder and former President of the British Society of Skeletal Radiologist and former Medical Director of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust he has wide clinical and research experience.

He has 177 publications with 4842 citations, Research Index Score 2146 (97 percentile), H index 30. He was President of the British Institute of Radiology (2014-2016). He is the Musculoskeletal Editor for Acta Scandinavica Radiologica. He works for two days week preparing expert witness reports.

For the last four years he has spent one day a week working in the Musculoskeletal Bone Research Laboratory at Imperial College London where he is undertaking a doctorate in research (MD res) studying silent vertebral compression fractures. He believes he is the only student at Imperial College who has an old person’s bus pass. He plays the Viola in a string orchestra on Saturday mornings. As a former national and international medal holder he coaches at City of Oxford Rowing Club on Sunday mornings.
